China was unbelievable and we feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to visit. We started out in Hong Kong like most everyone else. We arrived a couple days early and took advantage of some tours that were well worth the time. One to Lantau Island, the home of the Giant Buddha and some 80 temples and monasteries. While there we visited a small fishing village that was like something out of a movie with it's narrow streets, hoards of people (all smiling and looking quite content), small shops and fishing boats. Then next day we went to Stanley Market on Hong Kong Island to shop until we dropped. Stanley Market is a maze of small shops with just about anything Chinese you could imagine and everything is negotiable. Carolyn was in heaven and, I have to admit that I surrendered to several buying impulses and brought home my share of stuff. While in Hong Kong we went on several long walks. We wandered through market after market. We liked the Jade market which, thankfully, was under a tent to shade us from the hot sun and humidity. The most amazing and consistent thing of all (and this prevailed throughout our travel in China), is that the people are so friendly and so happy. Is was a delight just being around them.
